Changing career direction: a decision framework, not a leap of faith
How to compare two or three realistic career scenarios on evidence rather than on how you feel on a given Tuesday.
Career changes are usually framed as courage problems. More often they are analysis problems. You have several plausible directions and no structured way to compare them.
Build three scenarios, not one dream
Write down three directions: continuation with a sharper focus, an adjacent move that reuses most of your experience, and a genuine change of field. Three options prevent the false binary of stay or leap.
Score each on five dimensions
For every scenario, rate transferability of your current evidence, market demand over the next three years, time to first credible offer, financial impact in year one, and how much of your work you would actually enjoy. Use a simple one to five scale. The pattern matters more than the arithmetic.
Identify the cheapest test
Every scenario has a test that costs less than a month: a contract project, a certification module, three conversations with people already doing the work, or one application to see how the market reads your profile. Run the cheapest test for the two highest scoring scenarios before committing.
Watch for sunk cost dressed as loyalty
Years invested are not a reason to continue. They are only relevant where they create real transferable evidence. Ask what a new person with your exact skills would choose today, with no history in the current role.
Set a decision date
Open ended deliberation is the most expensive option. Pick a date, gather the evidence before it, and decide with what you have. Then commit for at least two quarters before reassessing.
