Career positioning for senior professionals: a practical framework
A four part framework for defining how the market should read your experience, with concrete tests you can run this week.
Senior professionals rarely lose opportunities because they lack experience. They lose them because the market cannot summarise what they are for in one sentence. Positioning fixes that.
What positioning actually means
Positioning is the answer to three questions asked in sequence: what problem do you solve, for which type of organisation, and what evidence proves you have solved it before. If any of the three is missing, the reader fills the gap with an assumption, and assumptions rarely favour you.
Step 1: name the problem, not the function
"Operations manager" is a function. "I stabilise supply chains during scale up" is a problem. Functions compete on volume. Problems compete on relevance. Write your problem statement in twelve words or fewer, then check whether a hiring manager would recognise it as something they are currently paying to solve.
Step 2: define the buying context
The same skill set is worth different amounts in different contexts. A finance lead who has taken a company through an audit after rapid growth is highly specific to companies about to do exactly that. Name the context: company stage, sector, geography, and the trigger event that creates demand for you.
Step 3: build the evidence stack
List three outcomes that only someone who has actually done the work could produce. Each needs a number, a timeframe, and a constraint you worked within. Constraints matter more than results on their own, because they signal judgement.
Step 4: test it on real readers
Send your positioning statement to three people who hire in your field. Ask one question: what job would you consider me for. If their answer is broader than your intention, your positioning is still too general.
